Dear Parents and Guardians of First-Year Students,

We are delighted to welcome your son or daughter to our campus. Penn State faculty and staff members are here to help students realize their dreams, and we strive to maintain a safe and healthy learning environment for all our students.

To help first-year students prepare for their arrival on campus, we require that all incoming first-year students complete Penn State SAFE (Student Alcohol Feedback and Education) and Penn State AWARE (a sexual assault awareness learning module). Penn State SAFE is a 1-hour online program that provides information about the physiological effects of alcohol, Penn State alcohol policies and related consequences, and state and local laws related to alcohol consumption. Even if your son or daughter does not consume alcohol, they may be impacted by those who do. The 45 minute Penn State AWARE program will help students learn the facts about sexual assault and sexual harassment and develop practical skills to stay safe.

Incoming first-year students will receive a hard-copy letter and an email in their Penn State email account with instructions for accessing and completing both of these online programs.

Students enrolled for summer semester at all Penn State campuses will be able to access the programs on May 31, 2017. The programs must be completed by June 28, 2017. Students enrolled for fall semester at all Penn State campuses will be able to access the programs on July 24, 2017. The programs must be completed by August 21, 2017. Approximately one month after completion of Penn State SAFE, students will receive an email reminder to complete a final follow-up survey.

To encourage an open dialogue with your student about alcohol-related issues, please click on the link below to access a section from Penn State SAFE about Penn State policies and Pennsylvania alcohol-related laws. If you have additional questions, please contact the Penn State SAFE and AWARE program coordinator, at 814-863-0461 or send an email to
